Two major drug busts in Beitbridge have led to the arrest of three suspects and the seizure of illegal substances worth more than US$34 000, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirmed on Monday.

In the first case, police arrested Runesu Emmanuel (37) and Tinashe Chivende (27) on 28 June for unlawful dealing in dangerous drugs. The suspects were intercepted at a security checkpoint along the Mazunga–Muranda dust road, while travelling in a Toyota Wish, registration AEQ 3565.

“Police in Beitbridge acted on received information and intercepted the vehicle. A search was conducted, leading to the recovery of 307.568 kg of dagga with a street value of US$30,756.80,” said the ZRP in a statement.

In a separate incident, Tarusarira Tauya (35) was arrested in Harare on 29 June after allegedly taking delivery of unregistered medicines smuggled from Beitbridge.

Detectives from the CID Drugs and Narcotics unit, who were conducting an anti-smuggling operation at Beitbridge Border Post on 28 June, intercepted a Rimbi Bus Tours coach and recovered 742 bottles of Broncleer cough syrup, each 100ml in volume. The consignment was reportedly being sent to Harare.

CID officers in Harare later tracked and apprehended the suspect at a garage along Simon Mazorodze Road as he loaded the contraband into a silver Toyota Wish, registration AFY 3876. The recovered medicine has an estimated street value of US$3 700.

The ZRP said investigations into both cases are ongoing and urged the public to assist in the fight against drug trafficking.
