The late Elias Sikholiwe Njani Moyo

Veteran nationalist Elias Sikholiwe Njani Moyo, who died last Saturday aged 100, has been declared a liberation hero.

In a letter dated 29 April, ZANU-PF Secretary General Obert Mpofu confirmed that President Emmerson Mnangagwa had conferred the honour, recognising Moyo’s pivotal role in the country’s fight for independence.

“His Excellency, the President and First Secretary of ZANU (PF), has conferred Liberation Hero status to the late Cde Elias Njani, who died on 26 April 2025,” Mpofu said.

A leading figure in the Zimbabwe African People’s Union (ZAPU), Moyo was instrumental in the liberation struggle.

Moyo will be laid to rest at Terelayne Village in Umzingwane District, under Chief Gwebu. Mpofu said government ministries have been directed to ensure Moyo’s family receives full benefits.

His family described him as a leader who “dedicated his life selflessly to the liberation of Zimbabwe and the empowerment of its people,” and whose imprisonment symbolised “his deep love for the nation.”

After independence, Moyo focused on grassroots economic development, spearheading initiatives to support community businesses in Matabeleland.

His family remembered him as “a devoted patriarch” committed to education, welfare, and the upliftment of future generations.
