A baby died after being run over by a vehicle at a plot in Glengarry, Bulawayo, police say.
The eight-month-old infant was sleeping on grass near a parked vehicle when a 52-year-old man, who had been harvesting tomatoes, reversed his car over the child on Tuesday afternoon.
The baby’s mother, who was working as a casual labourer harvesting tomatoes had placed her child about five metres from the vehicle.
Bulawayo Police Deputy spokesperson Assistant Inspector Nomalanga Msebele said the driver failed to notice the sleeping infant before starting his vehicle.
“The baby sustained serious head injuries and bruises to the stomach, and was pronounced dead upon arrival at United Bulawayo Hospitals,” she said.
Police urged drivers to exercise extreme caution and thoroughly check their surroundings, particularly when reversing in residential areas.
In a separate incident, police recovered a stolen safe containing more than US$10 500 from a stream bank near a beer garden in Tshabalala suburb.
The safe had been stolen from Hamara Shop in the Kelvin industrial area after thieves broke in through a window.
โThey proceeded to the cash office and lifted a Chubb safe and put it on a Jack trolley and pulled it out. Police tracked the trolley marks towards Tshabalala and managed to recover the safe which hadย US$10 569-00ย still intact,ย along a stream bank near aย beer garden,โ she said.ย
Msebele advised business owners against keeping large amounts of cash on their premises.
