Young woman seeks funding to pursue law degree

A young woman from Matabeleland South Province, Nobubelo Masuku, 25, is determined to achieve her dream of becoming a lawyer and is seeking financial assistance to attend university.

Masuku, a former student at Mkwabene High School, excelled academically, obtaining 8 O Levels and 13 points in Arts at the Advanced Level in 2018.

Despite her strong academic record, financial constraints have prevented Masuku from pursuing her higher education. “I’ve always aspired to continue my studies,” she says, “but unfortunately, I haven’t been able to afford it on my own. I’ve also tried applying for scholarships without success.”

Masuku’s desire to study law stems from a deep-seated commitment to social justice. “A large part of me feels the need to fight for the powerless,” she explains. “My upbringing influenced this decision. Things were tough for us.”

Raised by her grandmother due to her parents’ absence, Masuku credits her with being her biggest motivator. “My parents couldn’t be around, and my father has always been absent,” she shares. “So, my mother had to go abroad to try and provide for me.”

“The lack of financial resources has delayed my studies,” Masuku continues. “Every attempt I’ve made so far has been unsuccessful. I don’t want to be another one of those bright students who end up with no fulfilling career. I have big aspirations.”

While Masuku initially dreamed of studying abroad, her primary focus now is simply to access education. “I used to think studying abroad offered better opportunities,” she says. “However, at this point, all I care about is achieving my educational dream. I want to inspire every student who attended Mkwabene to dream big. We are not limited by our rural upbringing; we can achieve greatness too.”

Masuku’s situation is further complicated by her family circumstances. Her mother is currently unemployed after returning to the country, and as the eldest of six siblings, Masuku carries the responsibility of helping support their education.
