ZINWA tackles period poverty in rural schools with sanitary wear donation

The Zimbabwe National Water Authority (ZINWA) has taken a vital step towards combating period poverty in rural communities by distributing sanitary wear to 10 selected schools across the country.

This initiative forms part of their social responsibility efforts aimed at empowering girls and ensuring their uninterrupted access to education.

ZINWA secured a consignment of 10,000 sanitary pads specifically dedicated to rural schools, due to challenges faced by girls in these areas.

“At the moment, we are targeting rural schools and have selected 10 across the nation,” confirmed Gwayi-Mzingwane Catchment Corporate Communications and Marketing Officer, Admire Mlagami. “Some schools are yet to submit their names, but we are actively working to reach as many beneficiaries as possible.”

Madlelenyoni Secondary School in Ntabazinduna, Umguza District, was the first recipient of ZINWA’s generous donation.

Speaking at the handover ceremony, Gwayi Catchment Manager, Engineer Hassan Tobve, said ZINWA is committed to supporting the communities it serves.

“We aim to bring a positive impact not only by providing water but also by giving back to the communities where we operate. Addressing health and education needs, including menstrual hygiene, is crucial for fostering social well-being.”

Tobve acknowledged the alarming statistics surrounding period poverty in Zimbabwe, with a 2022 survey revealing that 72% of girls struggle to access sanitary wear.

This lack of access often leads to school absenteeism, impacting both academic progress and mental well-being.

“Period poverty can lead to stigmatisation and silence within families and communities,” explained Tobve. “Young girls deserve the same opportunities and support as their male counterparts. Providing menstrual hygiene products and advocating for open discussions are crucial steps towards empowering girls and ensuring their educational success.”
