Masinyoka Amahle light up Robert Sinyoka with solar-powered streetlights
Residents of Robert Sinyoka in Ward 17, Pumula North, coalesced under the name ‘Masinyoka Amahle,’ have collaborated to install seven solar street lights, aiming to address robbery concerns.
The solar lights, costing approximately R8,000, were launched on Wednesday at an event attended by Pumula Constituency Member of Parliament Sichelesile Mahlangu and the local councillor Sikhululekile Moyo.
Samuel Maseko, the organisation’s administrator, said they formed the group initially to assist each other during bereavements before diverting into other community development efforts.
“We bought the lights from South Africa and they cost us something around R8 000,” said Maseko.
The Bulawayo City Council (BCC) supported the initiative by providing seven poles and guidance on optimal light placement.
Maseko said the next phase of the project will be adding more lights to cover the whole area and the third phase will address water challenges faced by the community.
Councillor Moyo and MP Mahlangu praised the community-driven project, emphasizing its positive impact on safety and development.
Residents expressed optimism that the solar street lights would contribute to reducing robbery incidents and improve safety.
