The Bulawayo City Council (BCC) has called on businesses, institutions, and schools to clean the environment where they operate to keep the city clean.
The local authority is currently conducting its Big Spring Cleaning Week campaign, which runs until October 6.
City Corporate Communications Manager Nesisa Mpofu said the city is facing challenges in terms of resources, so residents and stakeholders must play their part in ensuring that litter is disposed of properly.
“We are doing our spring cleaning. As the city of Bulawayo, we have had this practice of cleaning the city, particularly now after spring, where we want to bring freshness into the city,” Mpofu said.
“What is of concern is the increase in the number of hotspots where a lot of illegal dumping has been taking place. Today we are at one of the areas where we are cleaning sanitary lanes and the surrounding areas. We have roped in the business community.”
Mpofu urged businesses and institutions to ensure that their surroundings are clean to promote a healthy environment.
“We are grateful for the overwhelming support that the business community, councillors, and residents’ associations have shown. They have come on board, pulling people and resources together and taking their time to come and clean. All wards are mobilizing people to clean our city. No one is too young or too old to clean the city.”
Mpofu also implored schools to play a part in cleaning their surroundings.
“We are also appealing to institutions to do their part. For instance, schools, there is no reason why schools should be dirty, both in the premises or their surroundings. All institutions and all companies must play their part to keep the city super clean.”
