Isandla Somusa builds toilets at Sangulube Primary School

Isandla Somusa, a non-profit organization, has built a block of toilets at Sangulube Primary School in Brunapeg, Mangwe, as part of its efforts to curb the sanitation crisis.

The organisation was formed in 2021 as a burial society and has since diversified into other community projects. It is currently composed of 143 households whose work and functions are guided by the constitution and values of Ubuntu.

The members, some of whom are based locally, in South Africa, and abroad, contributed R35,000 to construct the block of toilets at the school. This is their first project, and the organization will hand over a block of four toilets, two female and two male, to the school as part of the World Toilet Day celebrations on November 19, 2023.

Amkela Godzi Moyo, the chairperson of the organisation, told CITE in an interview that the absence of toilets at the school forced learners to practice open defecation.

“This is a major health hazard, especially for young girls,” Moyo said. “We are glad that we were able to provide these toilets to the school, and we hope that they will help to improve the health and well-being of the learners.”

Mercy Moyo, the CEO of Isandla Somusa, said that the organisation is committed to providing sustainable solutions that will improve the lives of children.

“School sanitation is a top priority for us,” Moyo said. “It encourages attendance, improves the performance of children, and creates the privacy they deserve.”

The organization is also expected to donate some materials to the learners on the day of the handover.
