BCC launches weeklong clean-up campaign
Moved by growing littering and illegal dumping, the Bulawayo City Council (BCC) has mooted a weeklong cleaning exercise dubbed the Big Spring Cleaning Week.
Slated for September 12 running up to September 16, the campaign will target the central business district.
In a notice released Monday, BCC said: “The City of Bulawayo will be running the Big Spring Cleaning Week, a programme to rid our CBD of accumulated waste, from 12 to 16 September 2022. You can be a part of it too. We are inviting stakeholders who can partner the city by: Selecting an area that they can clear of waste during this week or Providing a front-end loader and or trucks for clearing waste during this week.”
The programme comes at a time, the local authority has been struggling to collect garbage, particularly from illegal dumpsites in the Central Business District owing to resource constraints.
Bulawayo residents have however welcomed the new development saying it was long overdue.
“Bulawayo Progressive Residents Association (BPRA) welcomes the Bulawayo City Council initiative dubbed Big Spring Cleaning Week. We hope the residents, in particular the vending public, will fully partake in the cleaning of our environment in the CBD,” said BPRA secretary for administration Thembelani Dube.
“We urge the residents of Bulawayo and Bulawayo City Council to consider every day of the year a cleaning day for us to keep our environment clean and inculcate the attitude of protecting and sustainably using our physical environment where ever we live or work”
