Over 20 people injured after truck rams into Zupco bus
A Zimbabwe United Passenger Company (Zupco) bus plying the Emganwini route overturned after being hit on the side by a truck, Thursday morning, injuring over 20 passengers.
The accident took place at the busy Bellevue intersection.
In a statement, Bulawayo City Council (BCC) Fire Brigade acting chief officer Linos Phiri, said 23 people were injured.
“The bus had overturned, lying on the center of the roadway, the two vehicles were blocking the roadway,” said Phiri.
He said the truck driver failed to observe the road traffic regulations.
“A 28 tonne Volvo truck Registration AFQ 1172 belonging to Mr. Dlamini was in collusion with a ZUPCO commuter omnibus Scania Reg number 8758 belonging to Mr. F Nyathi on the center of the road intersection, 23 persons were injured and conveyed to hospital by Brigade Ambulance,” said Phiri.
The injured people were taken to United Bulawayo Hospitals (UBH).
The owner of the bus, South African based businessman Nodumo Nyathi confirmed the incident in a Facebook post.
“Transporting passengers safely is our goal. It is with a heavy heart to announce that one of our buses transporting passengers from Emganwini to Bulawayo CBD was involved in an accident at the Bellevue robots. The bus was hit by a sand truck and overturned,” said Nyathi.
“Bulawayo City Council ambulances transported injured passengers to Mpilo hospital, we wish all the injured passengers a speedy recovery,” he said.
In January, one of the buses belonging to the same company claimed a life and injured five other people after the driver lost control and rammed into people who were queueing for transport near Pick n Pay Hyper in the city centre.
Contacted for a comment, Bulawayo Police said they are still compiling the report.
