Twelve Institutions and 1 300 families on Tuesday received early Christmas treats from the Bulawayo Mayor’s Christmas cheer fund.
The homes and institutions which received donations include Railsten home, Ekuphumuleni old people’s home, John Smale children’s home, Luveve training school for girls, Percy Iboston and Luveve remand home, Emthunzini Wethemba, Entembeni old people’s home, Edith Duly old people’s home, Thuthuka, St Francis children’s home, Haven Trust and Thorngrove Hospital.
Speaking during the handover ceremony, Bulawayo mayor Solomon Mguni said he is pleased that despite the harsh economic climate, corporates and individuals gave towards the cause.
“I am pleased that we are handing over to 12 institutions and homes and 1 300 families who have been registered through our social welfare offices,” said Mayor Mguni.
“While the need is high as we received 11 116 applications, we can only provide assistance to 1300 which is a small fraction of the vulnerable population. It is my hope that the good lord will continue to touch each and every one of us to give. Let us also assist the needy members of our society and neighbours during this festive season to share the little that we have,” he said.
BCC Corporate Communications Manager Nesisa Mpofu said the Mayor’s Christmas cheer fund seeks to add cheer to different families during the festive season.
“Christmas is a season of joy but it is very possible that while we are celebrating at home, there are some who don’t notice that it’s Christmas time, so this token from the Mayor’s Christmas cheer fund is just to put that festive mood and to allow the City as a whole to celebrate with vulnerable members of our community,” said Mpofu.
Various homes which were present to receive the donation appreciated the donation.
