Commissioner-General for the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) Godwin Matanga has ascertained that investigations to catch culprits responsible for the White City bombing are underway and no stone will be left unturned. Addressing ZRP staff and journalists on Tuesday afternoon at Ross Camp in Bulawayo, Commissioner-General Matanga said investigating officers are tirelessly working to bring the culprits to book.
“From the look of things, this incident was apparently an attempted assassination of His Excellency The President Cde Emmerson Mnangagwa and other dignitaries. On behalf of the ZRP I reassure the nation that we are tirelessly investigating this case which has already unnecessarily claimed two lives. No stone will be left unturned.
“I would like to applaud the level of cooperation and support that the joint investigation team has received culminating in two suspects being accounted for. We appeal for more information that will help us in bringing these culprits to book,” said Commissioner-General Matanga.
He stated that ZRP is working towards a crime free society and to attain highest level of police public confidence and collaboration. He urged police officers to have their personal considerations subordinating to the interests of the nation.
“I implore you to revitalize all police patrol units in a view to assist in reducing crime through increased police visibility in all crime-prone areas within the city. These patrols can only help us to earn public confidence if they are properly planned and adequately supervised. Scenes must be timeously attended,” he said.
Commissioner-General Matanga decried corruption within the police force citing that anyone who is caught on the wrong side of the law will be brought to book.
“I reiterate my call for the shun of all forms of corruption. All those engaging in any form of corruption are living on borrowed time. No one is above the law and neither are police offices a harbour for corrupt officials who make the police force a mockery. Let us maintain and sustain discipline, asserting ourselves firmly on the ground in executing our constitutional mandate,” he said.
He added that there are some members of ZRP who leak false information to the media about developments occurring within the police force.
“Regrettably some amongst us have resorted to mischievously willfully communicate falsehoods to the media as anonymous sources. Such falsehoods are their views in regards to the developments within the organisation which they have deceitfully packaged as facts” he said.
Commissioner-General Matanga said ZRP has upped its game in preparing for the upcoming elections.
“The knowledge and experience we have gained over the years must enable us to professionally discharge our duty in enabling our beloved Zimbabwe to hold free, transparent and harmonised elections. May all Zimbabweans be encouraged not to engage in politically motivated violence ahead of the elections,” he said.
