Malawian embassy to conduct outreach program for its citizens in Byo

By Dumisani Nyoni

THE Embassy of Malawi is set to conduct an outreach program for its citizens based in Bulawayo and Matabeleland provinces to help them regularise their stay in Zimbabwe as well as apply for new passports, among other things.

The outreach program follows a visit by Malawian President Lazarus Chakwera last year in October in Zimbabwe where he met Malawian citizens and told them that they were free to have dual citizenship.

Chakwera said Malawi has since passed legislation enabling those who live abroad to choose to have dual citizenship should they desire.

So, as Zimbabwe welcomes them to be Zimbabweans, they can also continue to be Malawians.

According to a communiqué seen by CITE, Malawian ambassador to Zimbabwe, Annie Yauka Kumwenda said the program will commence from 26 to 28 April 2021, at the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair Malawi pavilion.

“The outreach program aims to assist Malawians in Zimbabwe to apply for new passports, emergency travel documents, replace old passports and help regularise their stay in Zimbabwe and also to introduce our new e-passport,” Kumwenda said.

“I, therefore, wish to request for your support and facilitation to disseminate the information to all Malawians at your mine, company, mosque or church. I have enclosed herein a poster giving details of the outreach program as well as the requirements for one to apply or renew a passport,” she said.

There are many Malawian citizens in Zimbabwe who came before independence looking for jobs in the mining and agriculture sector.
