Opposition party leader faces culpable homicide charge after passenger killed in car crash
Democratic Opposition Party (DOP) leader, Peter Harry Wilson is facing a culpable homicide charge after he was involved in a car accident on Wednesday evening along the Bulawayo-Plumtree highway which claimed the life of a woman he was travelling with.
Wilson was driving a Toyota Hiace when he rammed into a stationary Mercedes Benz truck that had developed a mechanical fault in the middle of the road.
One of his passengers who has been identified as 29 year old Angerster Chigora of Nketa suburb died on the spot while three people including Wilson suffered serious injuries.
Wilson sustained multiple fractures on his legs.
Bulawayo police spokesperson, Inspector Abednico Ncube confirmed the incident and said the police are carrying out investigations.
“The first part is a male adult aged 38 years of Mpopoma, Bulawayo, he was driving a white Mercedes Benz truck along Plumtree road due East with two passengers on board. The second part is a male adult, of Hillside, Bulawayo who was driving a Toyota Hiace silver in colour along Plumtree road due east with four passengers on board”.
Inspector Ncube added that as a result of the accident a female adult passenger aged 29 years of Nketa 9 Bulawayo died on the spot and her body was taken to United Bulawayo Hospital (UBH) for post-mortem.
“The other passenger, a male adult sustained a dislocation on the right shoulder, and he was taken to UBH where he was admitted at main casualty, and another passenger sustained back pains and he was taken to UBH by an ambulance and was waiting for treatment at main casualty,” he said.
CITE reached out to Wilson who indicated that he was not in a position to speak as he was heavily sedated.
Inspector Ncube urged drivers to exercise extreme caution and observe all roads and transport authority rules and regulations.
