Police in Bulawayo are investigating two cases of theft involving US$75 000 which was stolen from two motor vehicles in the city.
Briefing members of the press, Wednesday, Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Abednico Ncube urged motorists to desist from leaving large amounts of money in their vehicles.
Inspector Ncube said in one case a motorist lost US$46 838 while in the other US$30 000 was stolen.
“As police in Bulawayo, we have received two serious cases of theft from motor vehicles. The first one occurred on June 26 at around 11 am in the Belmont area where a man left a bag containing USD46 830 under the seat of his motor vehicle,” Insp Ncube said.
“Although his car was locked, he got inside a shop and came out within three minutes. He discovered that the car had been broken into and the bag containing money was missing.”
Insp Ncube said on June 30, at around 8 am, a messenger of a certain company reported for duty and was given US$30 000 by his manager to deposit at Stanbic Bank in Bulawayo.
“The messenger drove into town and parked the car at 12th Avenue and Fife street before he got to the bank. He went into a supermarket to get some food and when he got back he realised the car had been broken into and the envelope containing the money was missing,” said Insp Ncube.
“It is disheartening to note that members of the public continue to ignore the advice we give them. We always emphasise that people secure their property. Money is not a heavy commodity that one can risk to lose it as opposed to carrying it around for a short period.”
He said leaving cash, laptops and handbags in cars fuels criminal activities.
