ZUJ condemns harassment of journalists

The Zimbabwe Union of Journalists (ZUJ) has expressed dismay over the recent threats and intimidation of two journalists from Sources Media and News Hawks.

Rutendo Maraire, who works for Sources Media, was allegedly targeted online by Wicknell Chivhayo, while Owen Gagare of NewsHawks was threatened by the military for publishing a story implicating some military commanders in corrupt activities.

In a statement, ZUJ voiced its displeasure at these criminal acts aimed at silencing the media while they carry out their duties.

“The Zimbabwe Union of Journalists is perturbed by recent threats, intimidation, and cyberattacks on journalists Rutendo Maraire from Sources Media and Owen Gagare, Editor of NewsHawks, for simply doing their job. Maraire was attacked online by Wicknell Chivhayo, while Gagare and NewsHawks are allegedly facing threats from the military due to their investigative reporting,” the statement read.

ZUJ condemned Chivhayo’s actions and the alleged threats from the military as appalling, uncalled for, and unacceptable.

“ZUJ reminds Mr. Chivhayo that the country’s laws allow journalists to report on any issue accurately and with balance. Instead of resorting to insults and threats, providing accurate information would have been the appropriate response,” the statement continued.

The union also emphasized the availability of mechanisms for redress, such as the Zimbabwe Media Commission and the Voluntary Media Council of Zimbabwe, for individuals aggrieved by media reports.

ZUJ highlighted that acts of intimidation and violence against journalists contradict the government’s purported stance on media reform and ensuring the enjoyment of media freedoms as guaranteed by the constitution.

“The sad developments are a direct attack and an existential threat to the profession, a preposterous disregard of the constitution and our laws. We reiterate that journalism is not a crime and demand an end to such repugnant actions,” ZUJ asserted.

Regarding Maraire’s case, ZUJ stated that they have engaged with the police to inquire about delays in investigations and have been assured of a definitive position in the coming days.

“We will continue to engage with the police and other stakeholders to ensure the safety and security of our journalists,” the statement concluded.
