Zimsec markers demand outstanding allowances

By Promise Dube

Some examination markers engaged by the Zimbabwe Schools Examination Council (Zimsec) to mark the November ordinary level examinations last year claim they have not been paid their full fees.

The markers, who spoke to CITE on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisals, said they were paid US$175 of the US$375 promised for travel and subsistence allowances.

They were also meant to be paid US$250 for marking itself, which they have not yet received.

The markers further alleged that Zimsec closed all WhatsApp groups they were using for receiving updates.

Some markers claimed they received payments in their accounts, but the payments were later reversed.

Contacted for comment, Zimsec public relations manager Nicky Dlamini said all examiners had been paid.

“Examiner payments are and have been processed accordingly,” Dlamini said. “We implore any examiner who may have an anomaly to contact us for timely assistance.

“As an organisation, we cannot comment on WhatsApp groups as we do not corporately create these. If it was amongst a group of examiners, they may seek reprieve from their administrators.

“Zimsec is dedicated to ensuring that all examiners receive their dues timeously for the invaluable service they have provided.”
