Zimbabwean model Future Nyoni is representing the nation at the prestigious 12th edition of the Mr Africa International pageant, taking place in Sierra Leone from December 12 to 22, 2024.
The event, celebrated as a platform for empowering African young men, aims to highlight community-driven projects and inspire positive social impact across the continent.
Tapiwa Rubaya, Director of Mr Africa International Zimbabwe, said the pageant seeks to uplift initiatives spearheaded by young men and create opportunities for meaningful change.
Past winners have received financial support, enabling them to execute transformative projects, including building schools, clinics, and modelling agencies.
“The purpose of this event is to empower the African boy child by supporting projects that he leads in his community. For example, previous winners have received financial backing from House of Twitch and other sponsors, turning initiatives like constructing schools, clinics, and modeling agencies into reality,” said Rubaya.
This year, Future Nyoni carries Zimbabwe’s hopes on the global stage, following in the footsteps of past national representatives such as Tapiwa Zimhamba, Devson Luzane, and Mark Mabwe.
Notably, Luzane made history by becoming 3rd runner-up in 2021. Nyoni himself has already made strides internationally, finishing as 1st runner-up and winning the Best Suit Wear category in last year’s virtual edition of the pageant.
“Zimbabwe will be proudly represented by our king, Future Nyoni,” Rubaya noted. “The selection process focuses on height, catwalk ability, and—most importantly—candidates’ willingness to work with and uplift their communities. Height plays a significant role because winning Mr Africa International opens doors to global runway opportunities, including events like Accra Men’s Fashion Week, LA Fashion Week, and Nigeria Men’s Fashion Week.”
Reflecting on his passion for modelling, Nyoni said it is far more than just posing—it is a medium for self-expression. Inspired by former Miss Zimbabwe Samantha Tshuma, whom he regards as his mentor, Nyoni now uses his platform to give back to his community through charity work and outreach programs.
“Modeling is everything. It’s about expressing your thoughts and emotions on the runway, during commercial shoots, and in life in general,” Nyoni shared. “I was inspired by Samantha Tshuma, a queen with a loving heart. Through her mentorship, I’ve learned to persevere and face challenges fearlessly. With her guidance, I’m using my title as Mister Africa International runner-up to engage in charity and community work while also continuing to participate in international runway shows.”
Looking ahead, Nyoni envisions establishing a modelling agency to nurture young talent, particularly focusing on empowering boys in his hometown of Victoria Falls and surrounding areas.
“My goal is to create a modelling agency that grooms the boy child, especially in Victoria Falls and its surrounding areas,” Nyoni said. “Currently, aspiring models have to travel to Bulawayo or Harare for training and etiquette classes. By providing local opportunities, I hope to uplift and develop the modelling scene in Zimbabwe.”
