Farmers in Zimbili Village in Ward 19 Umzingwane District have vowed to step up their fight against stock theft after a dramatic incident in July exposed an organised cattle theft syndicate operating in the area.

According to witnesses, on July 25, 2025 two vehicles were seen in broad daylight exchanging parcels of meat suspected to be from stolen cattle.

When approached, both drivers attempted to speed off.

One car, however, ran out of fuel and was intercepted by alert villagers, who discovered two fresh cattle heads inside.

The second vehicle, a Honda Fit, managed to escape with the bulk of the meat.

The incident sparked outrage after it was widely shared on the Zimbili Extension community WhatsApp group, where farmers expressed frustration at the growing scale of livestock theft.

The villagers managed to catch three of the cattle rustlers while others  warned that unless communities tighten vigilance, cattle rustling could cripple their livelihoods.

“We are tired of watching our cattle disappear overnight while thieves make a fortune,” said one local farmer.

Ward 19 Councillor Pilate Sianda confirmed that a community meeting would be convened to map out strategies, including stronger patrols and information sharing with police.

“Stock theft remains one of the leading crimes in rural Matabeleland, this is why we urge farmers to brand their cattle and report suspicious activity as soon as possible,” said the councillor.
