The community in Zimbili, Ward 19 of Umzingwane District, is grappling with the devastating impact of prolonged drought, leaving many in desperate need of food assistance.

The drought, which began in 2017, has severely compromised food security, leading to increased hunger and malnutrition.

While a recent wheat distribution delivered by the Grain Marketing Board (GMB) brought temporary relief, villagers said only a few households benefited due to limited supply as the allocation was made based on family size, with larger households receiving priority.

“Drought has left almost everyone in need of humanitarian aid. The effects have not only hit farmers but have also disrupted schools and local businesses,” said community member Pretty Moyo.

Another villager, Nitah Phiri, painted a grim picture of the situation.

“Crops are withering, livestock are struggling to find food and water, families are going hungry. The situation is dire, and immediate action is needed,” she said.

Her sentiments were echoed by another community member, Sihle Dube who added their crops have dried up.

“Our livestock are barely surviving. We have lived on this land for generations, but the drought is making survival harder. We need support for farmers and investment in rural infrastructure,” she said.

Ward 19 Councillor Pilate Sibanda acknowledged the severity of the crisis and said authorities were working “tirelessly” to bring relief to those affected .

“We understand the gravity of the situation. We believe that by working together, we can build more resilient communities capable of withstanding the challenges brought by drought,” said the councillor.

“We are committed to partnering with government agencies, Non Governmental Organisations (NGOs) and local stakeholders to find sustainable solutions.”

“As hunger grips our community, we ask donors to provide fair distribution of aid to all those in need,” said Isaac Smoko Phiri.
