Mimosa Mine accident claims one

A face preparation supervisor at Zvishavane-based platinum miner, Mimosa Mining Company, was Saturday fatally struck by a falling rock at one of the shafts while working.

In a statement, the mine confirmed that Tichaona Nedziwe (39) succumbed to injuries sustained when a rock fell on him on Saturday evening while “barring down in a supported area at 22 Level South when a rock fell and seriously injured him.”

“First aid was promptly administered and Tichaona was evacuated from the mine. Unfortunately, he passed on upon admission at the mine clinic.”

Mimosa said investigations were underway “to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the accident.”

“The Mimosa Board, management and staff would like to express their sincere condolences to Tichaona’s family, his relatives and friends.”

This comes a few days after gold miner, Metallon Corporation announced that it had suspended operations at a shaft in How Mine after an accident which claimed one and injured four.

In a statement, the gold miner said “a rock fall during shaft examination on the North Shaft resulted in the death of an employee and the injury of four workers

“The injured personnel are receiving appropriate medical care. Operations at the North Shaft have been suspended pending a thorough investigation into the tragedy.”
