ZEC sets December 9 for council by-elections

The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) has announced that by-elections to replace recalled Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) councillors will be held on December 9, 2023.

The nomination court will sit on 7 November 2023.

Most of the recalled councillors are from the Bulawayo City Council (BCC).

These are Shepherd Sithole (Ward 1), Nkosinathi Hove-Mpofu (Ward 6), Donaldson Mabutho (Ward 9), Takunda Felix Madzana (Ward 18), Simbarashe Dube (Ward 20), Tinevimbo Maphosa (Ward 21), Thobeka Mmeli Moyo (Ward 22) and Arnold Batirai (Ward 24).

Also recalled were proportional representation councillors namely, Sarah Cronje, Mhizha Tabeth, Sibanda Dorcas and Zibusiso Tshongwe.

Inย a notice, ZEC Chief Elections Officerย Utloileย Silaigwanaย saidย the localย authority seats became vacant afterย the councillorsย ceased toย belong to the political party to which they were membersย and due to deathsย in some wards.ย 

โ€œWhereasย it is provided in terms of section 278 of the Constitution that the seat of a local authority becomes vacant in the circumstances set out in section 129 as if he or she were aย member of Parliament, the seats ofย councillorsย listed in the first schedule have become vacant by reason of theย councillorsย having ceased to belong to the political party which they were members when elected to the respective local authorities,โ€ he said.ย 

This after Sengezo Tshabangu who claims to be the CCC secretary general wrote to the Local Government Minister Winston Chitando informing him of the recalls.

Silaigwana also announced that by-elections will be held in Ward 22 Tongogara Ward RDC following the death of Zanu PF Councillor Golden Kapeta.

Also, to be replaced is the deceased Cafemol Moyo who was the Zibangwe RDC Ward 13 councillor for Zanu PF.

Another poll will be held at Ward 4 Zvishavane Town Council after the passing of Mundokaย Cheritaย of CCC.
