ZAPU launches new grassroots engagement plan

ZAPU has announced a renewed political strategy focused on direct engagement with people at the grassroots level, emphasising the importance of collective action in addressing Zimbabweโ€™s crisis.

This announcement came from ZAPU leader Sibangilizwe Nkomo, who reaffirmed his partyโ€™s commitment to grassroots engagement as part of a broader strategy to reconnect with communities, build a mass movement, and encourage national dialogue on solving the countryโ€™s challenges.

Nkomo called on Zimbabweans to unite in standing against what he termed the oppressive Zanu PF regime, describing the current political and economic challenges as a critical juncture in the countryโ€™s history.

Speaking about the partyโ€™s renewed strategy, Nkomo outlined ZAPUโ€™s determination to build a mass movement through direct engagement with people at the grassroots level.

โ€œAs ZAPU, we have chosen our path. We are returning to the grassroots, engaging directly with the masses. We are building a mass movement, reconnecting with communities, and fostering national dialogue,โ€ he said.

โ€œOur cadres will provide guidance in town hall and village meetings alike. We will stand shoulder-to-shoulder with workers, advocating for their rights within trade unions. In every tertiary institution, our Youth Front will actively participate in student representative councils to champion the rights and aspirations of students.โ€

The ZAPU leader criticised the monopolisation of political and economic power by the ruling elite, asserting that the public sphere must remain inclusive and democratic.

โ€œThe public sphere belongs to the people and cannot be monopolised by the ruling elites. Ironically, those who once paid lip service to the mantra that โ€˜the voice of the people is the voice of Godโ€™ are now actively working to stifle any dissenting voice,โ€ he noted.

Nkomo urged progressive political parties, civil society organisations, and individuals to join forces with ZAPU in building a united front against what he described as an oppressive and corrupt regime.

โ€œJoin us in our call for a united front against the oppressive and corrupt Zanu PF regime,โ€ urged the ZAPU leader.

โ€œOnly when we are united, led by a people-driven ZAPU, can we build the Zimbabwe we want. The journey ahead will not be easy, but it is one we must undertake with determination and unity.โ€

Nkomo stated that Zimbabwe stands at a crossroads in its history, where citizensโ€™ collective action or inaction will determine the countryโ€™s destiny.

โ€œNow is the time for courageous leadership, bold ideas, and unwavering commitment to the ideals that have always defined ZAPU. It is time for ZAPU to lead once again with elected representatives who will not be recklessly recalled at the behest of a captured opposition,โ€ Nkomo said.

โ€œThe will of the people through elections must never be reversed by a compromised cabal serving as an appendage of the ruling elites. Together, we can chart a new course for Zimbabwe, one rooted in justice, equity, and opportunity for all.โ€

Nkomo expressed disappointment with certain opposition figures whom he accused of enabling the Zanu PF administration to consolidate power, describing such actions as a betrayal of the peopleโ€™s aspirations.

โ€œThose who grabbed power by devious means have disappointed the masses after being given the peopleโ€™s trust through votes,โ€ he said, criticizing opposition politicians for becoming โ€œopposition enablersโ€ of Zanu PFโ€™s 2030 agenda.

โ€œNonetheless, our own economic collapse and its attendant humanitarian crisis resemble a virtual warzone. It is disheartening to witness some who don the colors of opposition working to extend the term of the current administration, shredding Zimbabweโ€™s constitution and betraying the peopleโ€™s aspirations.โ€

Citing scripture, Nkomo added: โ€œMatthew 7 verse 16 reminds us: โ€˜By their deeds, you will know them.โ€™ We strongly condemn all โ€˜oppositionโ€™ enablers of the ZANU PF 2030 agenda. Betrayal of this magnitude is unforgivable. The constitution of our nation is not a list of suggestions but a sacred covenant with the people.โ€

Nkomo concluded with a rallying call for Zimbabweans to join hands with ZAPU in pursuing the vision of a fair and just society, rooted in equality, opportunity, and the rule of law.

โ€œAt this critical political juncture, I call upon all Zimbabweans who believe in social justice, freedom of expression, and human rights to join hands with us,โ€ he said.

โ€œLet us unite to build a society where equality under the law is not just a principle but a lived realityโ€ฆ The journey ahead requires courage, resilience, and unity. Let us rise to the challenge and fulfill the promise of our great nation.โ€
