The United States Embassy in Zimbabwe has urged learners to consider digital learning platforms and scholarship programmes as they plan their academic futures following the release of examination results.
Speaking during a CITE View discussion on education and socio-cultural relations between Zimbabwe and the United States, the embassy’s Public Diplomacy Officer Kiera Emmons said online education was increasingly becoming a practical entry point for students seeking international opportunities, particularly those facing financial constraints.
She said initiatives such as EducationUSA were designed to guide Zimbabwean students wishing to further their studies by providing information on scholarships, universities and affordable learning options.
“We have a whole programme designed to spotlight these opportunities called EducationUSA… Right now, the starting point for a lot of opportunities for Zimbabwean students will be online opportunities,” Ms Emmons said.
She noted that many American universities were expanding beyond traditional campus-based models.
“American universities are thinking about the global classroom, beyond the brick and mortar… it is very affordable to do, with the same richness of content and educational experience and connection with people studying the same thing all over the world but on a digital platform,” she said.
Ms Emmons added that students could also access academic guidance, scholarship information and exchange programme details through American Spaces, including the American Space in Gweru.
“That is a good starting point, but there are tonnes of resources available in our American Space in Gweru, but also on the website and on social media. EducationUSA is a great place to find all those details,” she said.
Beyond education, she said trade and entrepreneurship were expected to play a growing role in diplomatic engagement between the two countries, presenting opportunities for Zimbabwean businesses and innovators.
“We are at a time when trade will become really important and trade is going to become the main focal point of most of our diplomatic efforts… that should be seen as a huge opportunity for Zimbabweans and entrepreneurs,” she said.
Ms Emmons said the embassy would continue promoting American technology, culture and innovation in Zimbabwe while supporting local creativity and enterprise. She also indicated plans to expand access to resources in cities such as Bulawayo through partnerships and digital platforms rather than traditional library-style facilities.
She encouraged learners, parents and educators to seek information through official embassy channels.
“I would like to encourage Zimbabweans who want to learn more to visit the American Space in Gweru, but also to follow us on social media where we post all our opportunities and future plans,” she said.
