Two young boys are missing after disappearing at a dam in rural Matabeleland South, sparking a major search operation by police and villagers.
The children, aged five and three, went missing on Monday morning at Bhinyela Dam in Sibantubanye Village, Ward 7, Filabusi while their mother was washing clothes nearby.
Their 27-year-old mother, Sheron Masuku, is understood to have raised the alarm after noticing the boys were no longer playing close by and could not be found.
Villagers later discovered the children’s shoes on a rock near the water, heightening fears they may have fallen into the dam. The incident has left the community deeply anxious as the search continues.
Matabeleland South Provincial Police spokesperson Inspector Chiratidzo Dube confirmed the incident and said officers and community members had gathered at the scene.
“The community is gathered at the scene, awaiting assistance as Sub Aqua teams are en route to aid in the search efforts. Suspicions are high that they may have fallen in water. We will have accurate results after the sub aqua team is done,” said Dube.
Inspector Dube said the exact circumstances surrounding the boys’ disappearance were still unclear, and investigations were under way. She added that a full statement would be issued once more information had been established.
