TPF party demands wages increase, job creation and economic reforms
To cushion Zimbabwean workers who continue to experience hardships, the Patriotic Front (TPF), an opposition party, has called on the government to raise wages, fund job creation, and enact economic reforms.
This call comes as Zimbabwe commemorates Workers Day on May 1 to honour the efforts of workers across the globe.
TPF Interim Secretary General, Prosper Ncube, said while they proudly acknowledge workers’ “invaluable” contributions to society and the economy, many Zimbabwean workers face formidable challenges.
“From the fields to the hospitals, from the classrooms to the boardrooms, workers are the heartbeat of our nation,” Ncube said in a statement titled: A Workers’ Day Manifesto: Building a Brighter Future for Zimbabwe.
“Yet, amidst their unwavering dedication, workers endure low wages, substandard working conditions, and limited prospects for advancement persist. “
The interim SG said the plight of inadequate wages weighs heavily on Zimbabwe as countless workers struggle to earn a dignified livelihood to support their families and communities.
“TPF staunchly believes that every worker merits a wage commensurate with their labour’s value and the cost of living. We advocate for policies that elevate the minimum wage, shield workers from wage exploitation, and ensure equitable employer contributions,” Ncube said.
He added that TPF also champions the right of workers to collectively bargain for improved wages and working conditions.
“We recognise that perpetuating low wages and limited advancement opportunities perpetuates poverty and inequality, particularly affecting marginalised groups. TPF stands resolute in promoting gender equality, eradicating racial and ethnic biases, and facilitating access to education and vocational programmes to empower workers,” Ncube said.
“Zimbabwe grapples with an alarming unemployment rate, reflecting the nation’s economic instability exacerbated by years of mismanagement and corruption.”
Ncube said as part of championing workers’ rights, TPF was advocating for policies and reforms that foster a fair and equitable society.
“We stand firm in our commitment to secure higher wages, robust safeguards against discrimination and exploitation, and substantial investment in education and vocational training,” he said.
“Today, we celebrate the indomitable spirit of the working class, recognising that their struggles transcend mere economics; they are inherently political. In the immortal words of Karl Marx, ‘Workers of the world, unite! You have nothing to lose but your chains.’”
TPF also implored workers to unite, organise, demand respect, dignity and opportunities they “rightfully” deserve.
“We pay homage to the brave souls who have valiantly fought for workers’ rights and social justice, from historical labour icons to contemporary grassroots activists. Their unwavering resolve fuels our determination to forge a brighter tomorrow for all Zimbabweans,” Ncube said.
“As we commemorate this Workers Day, let us heed the wisdom of Walter Rodney: ‘The power of the people is stronger than the power of any individual or group.’ Together, we can forge a more just, prosperous, and hopeful Zimbabwe.”
The interim SG said TPF acknowledges the urgency of addressing the high unemployment rate and advocates for a multifaceted approach such as investing in infrastructure and development projects to generate employment opportunities and stimulate economic growth.
“Fostering support for small businesses and entrepreneurship, vital engines of job creation. Prioritising education and vocational training initiatives to equip workers with requisite skills for a competitive global economy,” Ncube said.
“TPF affirms the government’s pivotal role in fostering an environment conducive to job creation and economic prosperity by ensuring stability, promoting investment, and combating corruption.”
However, the TPF acknowledged that job creation alone cannot redress all workforce challenges.
“TPF advocates for robust social safety nets to support vulnerable populations, including the elderly, disabled, and caregivers. We champion policies such as a basic income guarantee and universal pension systems as essential pillars of social cohesion and stability,” said the interim SG.
“In tandem with job creation and social welfare measures, TPF advocates for policies that promote financial inclusion and economic empowerment such as facilitating access to affordable banking and financial services, including microfinance and savings options.”
Providing tailored assistance and training to small-scale farmers and rural communities, pivotal contributors to our agricultural sector is also required, Ncube added.
“Supporting grassroots initiatives and cooperatives to drive economic development at the community level. By empowering Zimbabweans across all strata of society, we envision a robust, inclusive economy that offers opportunities for all,” he said.
“TPF endeavours to cultivate a landscape of hope and prosperity for all Zimbabweans. Together, let us march forward in unity, resilience, and determination, towards a future defined by equity, opportunity, and dignity. Long live the workers, and long live Zimbabwe!”
