Thieves broke into the Roman Catholic-run Sacred Heart College in Gweru on Wednesday morning and made way with an undisclosed amount of cash, laptops and Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) equipment.
The incident was confirmed by the school’s board chairman Walter Nemasasi in a statement to parents.
“Thieves broke in targeting all our offices. At this stage what we know is that some school fees received in the late afternoon from about 3 parents, club funds, personal monies of our staff, a few laptops and CCTV equipment were stolen. The matter is now in the hands of the police who have already started doing their investigations,” he said.
“All our students and resident staff are safe. The normal schooling program was not affected, we want to assure you that circumstances notwithstanding everything is under control.”
This comes after two other schools, George Silundika High School in Nyamandlovu lost US$17 280.00 in cash while Lomagundi College in Chinhoyi lost an undisclosed amount of cash, a Mazda Tribute motor vehicle, cellphones and laptops, among other valuables, to armed robbers.
National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi urged school authorities to avoid keeping large sums of money within their premises and also step up security measures at schools and employ guards from reputable security service providers who constantly monitor and review developments.
