Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (Zimparks) have said they are still searching for the Harare tourist who fell into a gorge in Victoria Falls on New Year’s Day.

The victim, according to Zimparks spokesperson, Tinashe Farawo, has been identified as Roy Dikinya.

Dikinya’s search according to Farawo began yesterday afternoon, immediately after he slipped into the danger zone gorge while allegedly attempting to take a picture of himself.

The incident, according to reports, occurred immediately after lunch hour.

“We have not managed to retrieve him,” Farawo said Saturday afternoon.

“This is a very sad incident and we are still carrying out investigations to get to the bottom of the tragedy, but according to our records, Dikinya was in the company of ten or so people that he had entered the falls with. He slipped while trying to take selfie pictures.”

Matabeleland North provincial police spokesperson, Chief Inspector Siphiwe Makonese, refused to be drawn into the matter.

“This is an issue that has international attraction and it does not give a good image of us as a nation, so you can call the national spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi for comment,” she said.

However, Nyathi’s mobile phone was unreachable.

Zambezi River, according to Zambezi River Authority (ZRA) has been receiving significant rains in the past month.
