MDC slams ZEC over ‘shambolic’ voter`s roll

The Professor Welshman Ncube led MDC has slammed the Zimbabwe Electoral Comission (ZEC) for what it says are ‘gross disparities’ in the provisional voter`s roll.

The electoral body has availed the provisional voter`s roll which will be open for inspection by registered voters until May 29.

Ncube`s party which is part of the MDC Alliance says while ZEC can be commended for introducing various platforms for registered voters to check their details, the system is fraught with disparities.

“MDC notes with dismay the shambolic state of the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) provisional voters’ roll as availed to the public during the voters’ roll inspection exercise which is set to end on 29 May 2018.

“Gross irregularities during the exercise have been cited in most parts of the country. While we commend ZEC for introducing various platforms such as the ZEC website and the bulk short message service (SMS) platform we submit that these are not adequate as they have proven to be not without shortfalls,” said MDC national spokesperson, Kurauone Chihwayi.

Chihwayi said they were concerned with reports that voters` details were not the same in the various platforms.

“MDC has noted that scores of people have cited disparities with regards to the online platform facilities Vis-à-vis physical verification. For instance some SMSs sent out indicate that one’s details are in order yet when they visit the centers the details would be in shambles,” he said.

The opposition party urged voters to physically cross check their details at their polling stations.

“While it may be time consuming for some, we urge prospective voters’ to physically go to the centers and check that their names are correctly spelt; correct gender is entered as well as polling station and national identification number so that they do not cry foul tomorrow when the election is stolen,” said Chihwayi.

“In some centres, prospective new registrants are failing to register due to unavailability or constant malfunctioning of Biometric voter registration kits”.

Chihwayi also urged ZEC to expeditiously attend to the concerns by the voters.
