Nine arrested for Pumula South mob justice murder

Nine Pumula South residents are facing a murder charge after they teamed up and meted out instant justice on two suspected thieves, resulting in the death of one of the suspects.

The men responded to an alarm raised by one of the residents who had spotted the two suspects climbing his precast wall.

Bulawayo police spokesperson, Inspector Abednico Ncube confirmed that they have launched investigations into the matter.

“Circumstances are that on the 20th of February around 00:30, one resident who was in the house heard noises outside and he peeped through the window and saw two people climbing the precast wall, he alerted his neighbours and they teamed up,” said Inspector Ncube.

“They approached the two thieves and one of them ran away, and they chased after one of them and apprehended him. They searched him and found him with a screwdriver and other two unknown dangerous weapons used for breaking into houses.

“They beat him up and inquired on the whereabouts of his partner and he then led them to where he was hiding, they knocked on the door and he opened, the accused persons then started beating them up using unknown objects,” he said.

Inspector Ncube said the two suspected thieves sustained injuries.

The accused people later handed over one of the suspects to the police while the other one was ferried to hospital.

One of the suspects later succumbed to the injuries and died.

Inspector Ncube urged members of the public to desist from taking the law into their own hands.

“So, all these nine residents who apprehended these intruders are being investigated and answering charges of murder, we are investigating this case as murder

“We urge members of the public to team up and protect their properties, we advise them not to take the law into their hands, they should not take things too personally and get angry when protecting their properties,” he said.
