Council to replace 500 old water meters

The Bulawayo City Council (BCC) will, Thursday, roll out a programme to replace about 500 dysfunctional household water meters in high density suburbs as part of the Bulawayo water and Sewerage Services Improvement Project (BWSSIP).

BWSSIP seeks to improve municipal water supply and sanitation services.

A private contractor Unik Construction Engineering Private Limited will be carrying out the bulk meter replacement works.

In a statement, Bulawayo Town Clerk, Christopher Dube said the project will also see water mains being upgraded.

“One of the key components of the project is the water mains upgrading, mains renewal and bulk domestic meter replacement that is being conducted in various parts of the City,” said Dube.

The project which is going to run till the end of June in Western Suburbs will commence in Pumula North and Pumula South.

“The City of Bulawayo is currently implementing the Bulawayo Water and Sewerage Services Improvement Project (BWSSIP) which will be installing 55 domestic meters in households without meters replacing 507 domestic nonfunctional meters in the Pumula North Suburb from Thursday, 13 February 2020,” he said.

Contacted for a comment, Ward 17 Councillor, Sikhululekile Moyo said they welcome the development in the ward.

“We welcome this as it is a good development in the ward and also because they took workers from the ward and we are hoping they will benefit from the program,” said Cllr Moyo.

In areas such as Kelvin North, Kelvin West, Kelvin East Thorngrove and Sizinda the mantainance will be conducted on February 24.

Between March 2 and March 25, the project will move to Old Magwegwe old/BS, New Magwegwe, Magwegwe West, Magwegwe North and Cowdray Park.

Areas which include Entumbane, Emakhandeni, Lobengula West, New Lobengula and Lobengula Extension will be covered between March 30 to April 23.

Nkulumane, Nketa, Emganwini, Bellevue,West Somerton, Matshobana and Mabuthweni will be maintained between April 27 till May 23.

Between May 25 to June 14 the project will move to Pumula East, Pumula Old, Luveve, Emqameni, Enqotsheni and Enjube will be maintained.
