Police raid ‘prayer meeting’…

4 MRP members and 3 foreigners detained

Police, Friday, swooped in on a house in Cowdray Park suburb and arrested four members of the Mthwakazi Republic Party (MRP) and three foreigners who were reportedly attending a prayer meeting.

Two of the foreigners are believed to be Namibian nationals and the other from Zambia.

In an interview with CITE, Mxolisi Mhlanga one of the MRP members who had been detained said about 12 police officers raided the house where they having a prayer meeting and arrested the seven.

“We were raided at a friend’s residence with our foreign guests who had come to pray with us. In our company were our three foreign guests – one from Zambia and two Namibians, of which one was female. In total were seven including fellow party members, Njabulo Ngwenya and Henry Dube,” he said.

Mhlanga claimed the police inquired if the foreigners had legal documents which enabled to travel to Zimbabwe.

“The police told us they were looking for foreigners and wanted to ascertain whether they are here legally or not,” he said.

The group was then taken to the Bulawayo Central Police Station where the four MRP members were questioned and later released

A lawyer, Nikiwe Ncube-Tshabalala who attended to the matter confirmed that her clients were released while the foreigners are still being detained.

“The MRP members were questioned and released. Their friends are still detained. No charges have been laid as yet as immigration wants to verify that they entered the country legally. The foreigners are friends to one Ngwenya, a member of the MRP,” she said.
