Police advise parents to be vigilant as schools open
Police in Bulawayo have warned members of the public to be aware of criminal elements who prey on unsuspecting victims during the ‘hectic’ period when schools open.
Schools will open for this yearโs first term on January 9, 2024.
According to Bulawayo acting Provincial Police Spokesperson Assistant Inspector Nomalanga Msebele, among these criminal elements are persons who pose as managers and promise employment to desperate people..
โPolice in Bulawayo would like to warn members of the public to be wary of criminal elements who seek to take advantage of this busy period and pounce on unsuspecting victims. Amongst these criminal elements are Bogus Managers who pretend to be legitimate managers offering employment and end up robbing people,โ she said.
โWe therefore caution members of the public not to entertain anyone who offers you a job on the street, authentic companies do not hire or interview prospective employees on the street.โ
Asst. Inspector Msebele said amid the hustle and bustle of sending children back to school, parents were encouraged to be extra vigilant and prudent, avoid leaving their bags and other belongings unattended as thieves will be targeting such unfortunate lapses in concentration.
โWe also urge school authorities to employ strict security measures when they are collecting and storing school fees money and if possible, to employ reputable security companies to offer better security around their premises,โ she said.
The acting police spokesperson said the opening of the school term was a period where parents and guardians accompanied children to their designated pick up points, meaning there will be an influx of motor vehicles in the CBD.
โWe encourage members of the public to exercise patience, due caution and adhere to the stipulated road traffic regulations. In that same regard we advise parents to travel in time and not do things last minute as this always leads to people being behind time and end up over speeding and violating other traffic laws, subsequently causing unnecessary road accidents,โ said Asst. Inspector Msebele.
Asst. Inspector Msebele said police will be on the ground in full force to make sure that sanity prevails on the streets.
