Plumtree man in critical condition after unprovoked axe attack
Police in Matabeleland South are urgently seeking information to apprehend the unidentified man who brutally attacked a 40-year-old man at Diba Business Centre, Plumtree, with an axe on December 16.
The victim Lekani Ndlovu is said to be in a critical condition.ย
Matabeleland South police spokesperson Inspector Loveness Mangena confirmed the incident and said they are looking for the man who ran away after committing the crime.
โOn theย 16th ofย December 2023, aย 40-year-old-manย Lekaniย Ndlovu fromย Diba under Chiefย Kandanaย was with his friend aged 45 yearsย Phumulaniย Ncube from the sameย area atย Diba businessย centerย drinking with other patrons.ย The accused was alsoย at theย businessย centre roamingย around the businessย centre, heย then wentย to the barย whereย Ndlovu and Ncube were drinking around 10 pm when peopleย were preparingย to retire for the night,โ said Inspector Mangena.ย
She said the accused person who was visibly drunk started shouting atย the patronsย who were at the bar.ย
โNdlovu and Ncube tried to reprimand him to stop shouting at people and this did not go well with him, he then removed an axe which was in his jacket and axed Ndlovu in the head. It got stuck and he failed to remove it.โ
โNcube tried to run away but he also hit him with a brick and he survived injuries in the head, nose and the eye, his condition was stable, but Ndlovu was taken to Plumtree Hospital as his condition was critical,โ said Inspector Mangena.
โThe accused ran away.โ
Inspector Mangena appealed for information from those who may knowย the whereaboutsย ofย the suspect.ย
โWe are urging citizens toย observeย the holidaysย peacefully andย respect other people. Peopleย shouldย also engage elders, traditional leaders, church elders andย usย the police in cases of misunderstandings. Maybeย thereย might have been a long-time disputeย but here there was noย apparentย reasonย why heย struckย theseย people,โ she said.ย
