Our government will uphold the rule of law: CCC
A Citizensโ Coalition for Change (CCC) government will promote transparency and accountability in all aspects of the legal system to ensure that justice is served and that the fundamental rights of every citizen are protected, the party has noted.
This is contained in a statement released by the opposition party condemning the continued persecution of party official and legislator, Job Sikhala.
Sikhala, who has been in jail for the past 328 days over several charges, was last week convicted for defeating the course of justice and fined $600.
He still remains in custody pending the finalisation of his trial on charges of incitement of public violence, for which he is also being held without bail.
โWe condemn the continued persecution of our MP, Hon Job Sikhala, who has spent 328 days in pre-trial detention. The manipulation of the law for political gain is an affront to democracy and severely undermines the principles of justice and fairness,โ the party noted.
โThe persecution of political opponents by the regime in Harare is unacceptable, and we condemn this type of behaviour in the strongest possible terms. Intolerance, discrimination, and persecution have no place in our government, and we will work tirelessly with the citizens to uphold the rule of law and promote a just and equitable society for everyone.โ
Transform Zimbabwe leader Jacob Ngarivhume was recently sentenced to four years in jail on charges of inciting public violence in 2020 by Harare magistrate Feresi Chakanyuka.
His sentence was reduced to three years without an option of a fine after a year was suspended on condition of good behaviour.
CCC national spokesperson Advocate Fadzayi Mahere, was also convicted and fined $500 for conviction on allegations of publishing falsehoods, a sentence she is currently challenging in the High Court.
