BCC shuts down water supplies

Bulawayo City Council (BCC) has warned residents of city wide water supply interruptions owing to loss of electricity at supply dams.

In a statement, Saturday, Town Clerk Christopher Dube said all areas of the city will be affected save for the Central Business District, Industry and mines.

The country’s second largest city is battling its worst water crisis, with some residents having water supplies only once a week.

Due to severe drought that has affected the Matabeleland region, the city decommissioned some of its supply dams, remaining with only three which are struggling to meet the demand for the precious liquid.

“The city of Bulawayo would like to advise members of the public of water supply interruption city wide. The interruption is due to loss of electricity on both the Nyamandlovu-Cowdray Park line feeding Magwegwe Reservoir and Ncema-Fernhill line feeding the Tuli and Criterion Reservoirs,” Dube stated.

“All the suburbs in the Eastern and Western areas are closed except for the Central Business District and Industry and mines.”

Dube further noted that in light of the situation, consumers are advised that if electricity is restored, the system will need time to build up and stabilise.

“Council will advise accordingly as to which areas will be opened as soon as the system normalises,” he said.
