A 35-year-old man from Village 8B Square in Igusi, Nyamandlovu, has been arrested after allegedly stoning his 89-year-old grandmother to death during a heated argument over the circumstances surrounding his parents’ deaths.
The suspect has been identified as Bhekimpilo Ncube. The deceased, his grandmother, has been named as Idah Ncube.
Village Head Zwelani Mpofu confirmed the incident to CITE, stating that it took place in his jurisdiction. He said the suspect had been persistently demanding that his grandmother show him the grave of his late father.
Matabeleland North provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Glory Banda, said the murder occurred on Tuesday, 1 July 2025, at around 6:30 PM.
“The accused asked the now deceased about the cause of his parents’ deaths. Idah Ncube informed him that they had died of natural causes. However, her explanation did not satisfy him, and he accused her of being responsible for their deaths,” said Inspector Banda.
A misunderstanding reportedly escalated when Bhekimpilo picked up a brick from beside the verandah.
“He force-marched her out of the homestead, demanding further answers. He then became violent and struck her several times on the back of the head. She collapsed and died on the spot,” said Banda.
The elderly woman sustained multiple skull fractures. Police responded to the scene and arrested the suspect. The brick used in the assault was recovered as evidence.
The body of the deceased was taken to United Bulawayo Hospitals for a post-mortem examination.
