Nearly 400 Zimbabweans hospitalised for Covid-19

NEARLY 400 Zimbabweans remain hospitalised across the country for Covid-19 related treatment as infections continue to increase on a daily basis, the Ministry of Health and Childcare said late Thursday.

The country yesterday recorded 1, 357 Covid-19 cases bringing the cumulative total of Covid-19 cases to a total of 51, 221 including 1, 808 deaths.

On Thursday alone, 19 people succumbed to the pandemic.

“As of 30 June 2021, at 1500 hours there were 382 hospitalised cases,” said the Ministry of Health in its latest update.

The Ministry said there were 35 new admissions recorded Thursday adding 16 Covid patients were in the Intensive Care Units.

The government has, however, maintained that the country has enough hospital beds for Covid-19 related ailments.

The coronavirus situation is worsening in the country at a time when the government is intensifying its vaccination drive with 5, 537 people having received their first jab yesterday bringing the cumulative total to 782, 698.

The figure for the fully vaccinated Zimbabweans now stands at 559, 262 after the inoculation of 3, 985 people yesterday.

Tests conducted yesterday were 10 918 and the positivity rate was 12, 4 percent while the national recovery rate is at 77 percent following 290 recoveries recorded yesterday.

While total recoveries stand at 39, 411, active cases are at 10, 002.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa on Tuesday tightened the country’s Covid-19 control measures, moving them to a tougher level 4.

Under the new lockdown measures, businesses are now expected to operate from 8 am and close at 3.30 pm with intercity movement being prohibited, except for production and distribution of food and medicine.

Commercial transport remains operational to allow the economy to continue to run, but under strict observance of Covid-19 protocols with the industry being directed to decongest workplaces to 40 percent of manning levels

The curfew hours run from 6.30 pm-6 am while those deported back to Zimbabwe will be subjected to self-quarantine, or be quarantined in identified places.

The new lockdown measures are subject to review in two weeks’ time.
