Ngaidzore sues CIO and police chiefs for $150K

Opposition legislator Takudzwa Ngadziore is suing Central Intelligence Officers (CIO), the Police Commissioner General, and the Home Affairs Minister for $150,000 over allegations of abduction and torture.

Ngadziore was allegedly abducted and tortured last November while on his way to attend a parliamentary session. He reportedly identified his abductors through social media reports.

Represented by Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights, Ngadziore seeks compensation for the damages suffered during the ordeal.

“Ngadziore is suing two CIO operatives, Nicholas Kajese and Abraham Pasi, along with Isaac Moyo, the Director-General of CIO, Zimbabwe Republic Police Commissioner-General Godwin Matanga, and Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage Minister Kazembe Kazembe, for $150,000 for the abduction and torture, which he said was an egregious violation of his rights and freedoms,” ZLHR stated in the summons filed at the Harare High Court.

“Ngadziore was hospitalised after sustaining injuries when he was abducted by gun-brandishing men outside his residence in Harare on November 1, 2023. He was on his way to attend a parliamentary session at the New Parliament Building in Mt Hampden when he was bundled into a vehicle, blindfolded with a sack, stripped naked, and tortured.”

Ngadziore managed to record the abduction ordeal live on his Facebook page before allegedly being injected with an unknown substance and later dumped in Christon Bank, just outside Harare.

“His abduction and torture violate his rights to freedom of personal security enshrined in Section 52 of the Constitution, his right to freedom from torture, inhuman and degrading treatment or punishment as guaranteed in Section 53 of the Constitution, and his right to human dignity provided in Section 51 of the Constitution,” ZLHR noted.

“Of the $150,000 that Hon. Ngadziore is demanding as compensation for his abduction and torture, $50,000 will be for pain and suffering, $50,000 for unlawful deprivation of liberty, and $50,000 for humiliation, affront to dignity, and embarrassment.”
