A three year old minor drowned in a toilet pit in Cowdray Park suburb, Bulawayo, while playing with her nine year old friend, police have confirmed.

Bulawayo Police spokesperson, Inspector Nomalanga Msebele, said the incident occurred on Friday around 6PM in the evening.

Insp Msebele said the toilet pit was approximately 2,5 meters deep and was half full of water.

“Police confirms receiving a sudden death case of a female juvenile aged three, of Cowdray park, Bulawayo, who fell into a toilet pit with water and drowned,” Insp Msebele said.

“On November 28, 2025, at around 6PM, the minor was playing near the toilet of a nearby house in Cowdray Park, with her friend, another juvenile aged nine. She suddenly slipped and fell into the toilet pit approximately 2,5 m deep, half full with water. “The nine-year-old rushed to the now deceased’s place of residence where she informed her aunt, aged 22. The aunt quickly rushed to the toilet pit where she retrieved her niece and tried to render first aid but it was too late. The body of the deceased was ferried to UBH hospital mortuary for postmortem.”

Insp Msebele urged parents and guardians to monitor children and warn them not to play near water bodies and deep pits to avoid loss of life.

She also warned members of the public not to cross flooded streams and rivers but to wait for them to subside especially during the rainy season.
