Two men from Lusulu in Binga are on the run after they allegedly fatally assaulted a fellow villager with logs and a spear accusing him of having extramarital affairs with their wives.
Matabeleland North acting police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Christopher Mahohoma said police are appealing for information that may lead to the arrest of two suspects Polite Ndlovu (24) and Justice
Ndlovu (22).
The duo allegedly proceeded to the now-deceased Stephen Mpofu’s homestead where they broke the door to the bedroom hut and assaulted him at night.
Mpofu (36) died on the way to the clinic.
“Police in Lusulu are investigating circumstances surrounding the death of Stephen Mpofu who was fatally struck with logs and spear on 7 December 2022 at his own homestead in Kokoloza area, Lusulu, Binga,” said Assistant Inspector Mahohoma.
He said the two suspected assailants went to Mpofu’s homestead around 4 am and found him and his wife asleep.
The couple reportedly heard the two Ndlovu suspects shouting outside claiming that they wanted to kill Mpofu for having love affairs with their wives.
“The two suspects broke the door to the bedroom hut and Stephen Mpofu tried to escape the attack and unfortunately he was grabbed by one of the suspects. The two suspects started assaulting him with logs and a spear,” said the police.
Police said Mpofu’s wife phoned the village head who rushed to the scene and found the two suspects still assaulting Mpofu who was lying helpless in a pool of blood.
The village head tried to restrain the two but they then turned the heat on him and he fled.
After assaulting Mpofu, the two suspects left the scene and the village head and the deceased’s wife tried to render first aid before rushing him to a nearby clinic.
Mpofu however died before reaching the clinic.
A report was made to the police who attended the scene and recovered the logs and a spear.
Mpofu’s body had two deep cuts on the head, a deep cut on the left cheek, swollen face and several lacerations on the head.
Assistant Inspector Mahohoma said the two suspects are at large.
