Police in Bulawayo have launched an investigation after a man was found hanging from a tree in a bushy area in Northend on Thursday morning.
Inspector Nomalanga Msebele, the Bulawayo provincial police spokesperson, said officers were alerted at around 09:00 following an anonymous call reporting the discovery.
“The deceased was wearing black faded jeans, a brown T-shirt, a green jacket, green socks, a black woollen hat and white takkies. He is tall and medium built. The body was taken to United Bulawayo Hospitals mortuary for a post-mortem,” she said.
A Northend resident who witnessed the scene said she was walking to work when she noticed people gathered near Masotsha Flats along 1st Avenue, close to Luna Park.
“There were people surrounding the body, and everyone looked shocked and confused. It was a very sad and frightening scene,” she said.
Police have appealed for assistance in identifying the man.
“We urge members of the public with a missing relative who matches this description to contact the Zimbabwe Republic Police in Khumalo on 0292-260633 or visit the UBH mortuary,” Inspector Msebele said.
Zimbabwe continues to record high suicide rates. According to the World Health Organisation, around 17 people per 100,000 died by suicide in 2021, with men significantly more affected than women.
