A 54-year-old man has died after being attacked by his nephew during a family gathering in Esigodini, Matabeleland South.

Police said Norman Moyo was struck with a wooden log by his 25-year-old nephew, Sekhona Nkomo, following a dispute on 9 September in Crocodile Village.

Matabeleland South provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Chiratidzo Dube, said the pair had been drinking with relatives at a welcome-home celebration for Nkomo, who had recently returned from South Africa.

“During the event, a misunderstanding arose between the accused and Norman Moyo over a social issue and as a result, the accused picked a wooden log and struck Norman Moyo twice on the neck,” said Dube.

According to police, tensions escalated after Moyo confronted his nephew about the sale of a cow to Nkomo’s father. Nkomo allegedly accused his uncle of cheating his father and then assaulted him.

Moyo sustained serious injuries and was taken to Esigodini District Hospital before being transferred to Mpilo Central Hospital in Bulawayo, where he died on 17 September.

Police said the suspect was arrested shortly after the attack and remains in custody. Investigations are ongoing.
