Lupane man in court over okapi attack
A Lupane man is lucky to be alive after he was stabbed with an okapi knife on the stomach by his neighbour following an altercation at a beer drink on Christmas Day.
Melusi Ngwenya of Dakiwe village in Lupane was rushed to United Bulawayo Hospitals where he is admitted following the assault by Remnant Msimanga (35) from the same area.
Msimanga was not asked to plead a charge of attempted murder when he appeared before Lupane magistrate Ndumo Masuku following his arrest for stabbing his neighbour, Ngwenya.
Msimanga appeared for initial remand and was remanded in custody until 11 January when he will appear at the Hwange regional court for a possible start of the trial.
He was not asked to plead to the charge and was advised to apply to the High Court for bail.
Prosecutor, Zandile Loreen Ndebele said Msimanga drew an okapi knife and stabbed Ngwenya on the stomach during an altercation.
“On Christmas day around 5am, the two were at Magobisi shops, Dakiwe Business centre drinking beer with other villagers. The two had a misunderstanding over an undisclosed issue resulting in the accused drawing an okapi knife and stabbing the complainant once on the stomach and twice on the left hand,” said the prosecutor.
Msimanga fled from the scene leaving Ngwenya in pain.
Ngwenya was taken to the police by his father to report the case and was referred to St Luke’s Hospital where he was admitted before being transferred to United Bulawayo Hospitals because of the seriousness of the injury.
