BCC introduces emergency 48-hour water shedding programme

BULAWAYO residents have to deal with spending at most four days without water supplies after the local authority introduced an emergency 48-hour water shedding program.

The water supply challenges were caused by a burst on the Flowserve raw water pipeline and the BWSSIP G01/3 scheduled shutdown.

Already, the residents have been enduring at least 24 hours without the precious liquid.

In areas receiving water from the Criterion, 6J, Riffle Range, Magwegwe as well as the Hillside Reservoirs, the two-day program will be shared between the 15th and the 21st of this month while areas fed by the Tuli Reservoir will have no water from 17th to the 21st of July.

Thembelani Dube, the secretary of Bulawayo Progressive Residents Association (BPRA) in an interview with CITE said:

“The water shedding schedule is an entrenchment of water woes continuously experienced by the residents of Bulawayo. It increases the chances of outbreak of gastrointestinal diseases spreading and affecting the residents due to inadequate water sources supplying the city.”

Last month, the local authority introduced a program where residents had to spend 24 hours without water as water levels in dams continued to deteriorate.

“The shedding is in bad taste to the residents considering the recent indexing of the bills in United States dollars,” Dube added.
