A 35‑year‑old man from Inyathi, Matabeleland North, is appealing for urgent financial assistance to buy a ventilator after his health rapidly deteriorated following three years of working underground at a local mine.
Zenzo Mhlanga, who has been admitted to United Bulawayo Hospitals (UBH) for the past two months, is battling severe breathing difficulties linked to asthma, a condition he says was worsened by prolonged exposure to dusty conditions while working underground.
In an interview with CITE from his hospital bed, Mhlanga said his situation has become unbearable as he struggles to breathe without assistance.
“I am no longer able to breathe properly on my own. Every day feels like a battle just to stay alive. The doctors have told me that I need a ventilator, but I do not have the money to buy one,” said Mhlanga.
He added that the US$600 required for the ventilator is beyond his reach, especially now that he is unable to work and provide for his family.
“I am pleading to anyone who can help me. I just want to live and be there for my children. I have three children who still depend on me, and it pains me to see them suffering because I can no longer provide for them,” said Mhlanga.
Mhlanga explained that his condition started as mild breathing problems but gradually worsened over time, which he believes is linked to the dusty conditions at the mine.
“At first, it was just small chest pains and shortness of breath, but I ignored it because I needed the job. Now it has reached a point where I cannot even walk properly without losing my breath,” he said.
His prolonged hospital stay has also placed a heavy burden on his family, who have been struggling to cover daily expenses while trying to support his treatment.
“I worry about my children every day. They need food, school fees, and care, but I am stuck here, unable to help them. That is why I am asking for help. Even the smallest contribution can make a difference,” said Mhlanga.
