Hillside residents apprehend copper cable thieves

Two Sizinda men, Ephraim Mbewe (40) and Leeroy Manyora (27) have been arrested for stealing copper cables from street lights.

Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Abednico Ncube confirmed the incident, which took place on June 1st, 2024, around 1:00 PM.

“Residents along Leicester Road in the Hillside area spotted the accused damaging street lights and cutting copper wires,” Inspector Ncube said. “The residents confronted the men, who then fled the scene. The residents gave chase and were able to apprehend Leeroy Manyora, who was subsequently taken to the Hillside police station.”

According to Inspector Ncube, Manyora confessed to the crime during questioning and revealed his accomplice to be Ephraim Mbewe. “Following Manyora’s statement, the police conducted a raid that led to Mbewe’s arrest.”

“The police commend the Hillside community for their vigilance and cooperation in apprehending these criminals,” Inspector Ncube added. “We encourage other suburbs to follow suit and work together to fight crime in their neighbourhoods.”
