Grade 1 pupil hit and killed by speeding car
A Victoria Falls family has been thrown into mourning after its seven-year-old son was fatally hit by a speeding car while walking home from school on Wednesday afternoon.
Alemekwe Mwinde was doing Grade One at Chinotimba Primary School.
He had just knocked off and heading home when a Nissan Sunny driven by Allen Chingombe of Mkhosana hit him as he tried to cross the highway at a junction between Mkhosana and Chintomba suburbs.
The boy died on the spot around 1 pm.
His father David Mwinde said the family was heartbroken.
โMost of the time he walked in the company of other kids but on this day he was alone. This is a very disturbing moment for us as a family and leaves us helpless especially knowing that we have lost a son just like that. He was our last born and we are left with two children. We are devastated as a family,โ said Mwinde.
The school authorities said the death of the little boy was a loss not only to family, but to the learning institution as other learners were heartbroken.
Police confirmed the accident and said investigations were in progress to ascertain preliminary reports of speeding by Chingombe.
There has been concerns about failure to observe road traffic rules by both motorists and pedestrians, especially in Victoria Falls.
Police and Traffic Safety Council have implored road users to exercise caution when using the country’s roads.
