Govt backtracks on examination fees
Government has reversed the newly announced 2020 public examination fees and reverted to the previous fee structure approved in 2015.
The Zimbabwe School Examination Council (ZIMSEC) had hiked examination fees from $15 to $190 for Ordinary Level candidates and $443 for extraterritorial candidates.
Advanced Level candidates were now expected $351 up from $16 for both in-school and private candidates as well as $324 for communication skills.
Extraterritorial candidates were expected to pay $716.
In a press statement, Wednesday, the Minister of Primary and Secondary Education Ambassador Cain Mathema said the new fees will be announced after further consultations with various stakeholders.
“Parents and guardians are therefore advised to continue paying the fees approved in 2015.Please be advised that the deadlines for exam fees payment remain the same,” said Min Mathema.
He added that the reviewed fees reflected the costs that the council was facing but the fees have been terminated immediately.
“While the exam fees that were published are based on the actual cost of each exam the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education would like to inform parents and guardians that following further representations the recently released circular on the 2020 examination fees have been cancelled with immediate effect,” said the minister.
“New fees will be announced after further consultations have been made with all relevant stakeholders.”
