Zim Covid-19 cases surge

Zimbabwe is beginning to see an increase in Covid-19 new cases, with 712 new infections recorded yesterday, statistics from the Ministry of Health and Child Care indicated.

This comes at a time when there are fears of the Covid-19 fourth wave following the detection of the new variant-Omicron in neighbouring South Africa and Botswana and other parts of the world.

All new cases were local.

In the period between 1 November 2021 and 26 November 2021, the country was recording less than 100 daily cases.

There was a spike in new cases on 27 November 2021, when 115 cases were recorded and the following day the cases dropped to 40.  

On 29 November 2021, 235 new cases were recorded and 399 new cases were recorded on the 30th of November 2021.

Of the712 new cases recorded yesterday, Harare recorded the highest cases with 246 new cases.

Manicaland recorded the second-highest cases with 139 new cases.

The third highest cases were recorded in Bulawayo and Mashonaland East provinces as both recorded 72 new cases.

Masvingo recorded 60 new cases, Midlands recorded 56 new cases, Matabeleland North recorded 32 cases, Mashonaland West recorded 20 new cases, Mashonaland Central recorded eight new cases while Matabeleland South recorded seven new cases.

“712 new cases (all local) and zero death reported today. (7-day rolling average) for new cases rises to227 from 131 (yesterday). 104 are cases detected fro0m learning institutions across the country,” said the Ministry of Health and Child Care.

Of the 6 148 tests conducted yesterday, the positivity rate was 11.6 percent.

The Ministry said 14 499 people received their first dose yesterday bringing cumulative for the first dose to 3 809 048 while 13 999 received their second dose bringing cumulative for the second dose to 2 830 542 as at 1600hours.

As of 30 November 2021 at 1500hours there were 52 hospitalized cases; 18 new admissions’ five asymptomatic; 33 mild to moderate, 11 severe, and three people were in Intensive Care Units.

“Thirty-Seven (37) new recoveries: National recovery rate rises to 96 percent and active cases go up to 1 846. As of today, Zimbabwe has recovered 135 337 cases, 128 784 recoveries, and 4 707 deaths,” said the Ministry of Health and Child Care.
